they don’t have the body types for it and can’t fit in the roles? You mean, its constructed to fit just ONE body type and all the roles are WRITTEN in a fantasy world where POC don’t exist.

I had friends taking a ballet class and the instructor told all the black girls in class that they had a disease called lordosis (too much curvature of the spine) - basically saying their asses were deformed and thus already pre-disposed to the inability to perform ballet properly…

Okay, people. Hold the fuck up. No black ballerinas? Seriously?

There seems to be some kind of crazy myth in the ballet world that POC can’t do ballet, and a lot of people say it’s because of some mythical “body type” women of color all magically have. Women of color come in all shapes and sizes, with their weight distributed throughout their body in different ways. People seem to think that carrying your weight in your hips, thighs and butt make you a bad ballerina, but it doesn’t. Everyone has a center where they carry their weight. Mine is in my butt; some people it’s their tummy, or arms, or whatever.

There is a body type for professional ballet. You have to be short, 5’4” or under, thin and muscular. That’s about it. What is more important than being thin, however, is the muscular bit. You have to be strong to hold yourself up on pointe shoes, and it is only because the dance world is full of discrimination and racists that the only people visible in the ballet world are the small, skinny— often sick— white girls. Someone’s ethnic background only matters because the people who cast shows think it does, because they are racist assholes. That’s it. That’s the only reason.

There are all kinds of black ballerinas— or Asian ballerinas, or Latinas, or any ballerina of color— who don’t get a chance to go pro not because they aren’t good, or there is something about them being black that makes them unable to dance well, but because racist assholes deny them access. There isn’t an issue of not having roles for them. Who says they can’t be the Swan Queen? Who says they can’t be Cinderella, or Juliet, or Clara? There is nothing in dance that requires being a certain color, because you are telling a story through the movement of your body and the music, not the color of your skin or the language you speak.

The fact that beautiful dancers are being denied access to the world of dance and we are being denied the privilege of watching them dance is a travesty, and I am ashamed of the OP and anyone in the ballet community that agrees with them.
