Jenna Talackova, 23, of Vancouver has been disqualified from the Miss Universe pageant solely because she is transgender.
“She did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form,” stated a Miss Universe Canada release issued on Friday.
“We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best,” it concludes, without specifying what requirements she did not meet.
The basic requirements to compete are that the participant must not be married or have been previously married, must not have given birth to/parented a child, and must be a Canadian citizen between the ages of 18 and 27.
There is no mention of rules regarding SRS or cosmetic surgery of any kind. She has been disqualified based on irrelevant information, when she deserves the right to compete just as much as any of the other competitors. It’s blatant discrimination. This isn’t about the pageant- it’s about equality.
